Styli with ceramic hollow spheres are frequently used as mechanical filters when probing coarse and rough surface structures due to their large sphere geometry. The ceramic hollow sphere is characterized by its exceptionally low weight and, thanks to its high form accuracy, enables precise and highly repeatable measurement results.
The combination of a large sphere diameter and low weight allows for very long stylus configurations with an exceptionally favorable sphere-to-stem ratio. This makes this stylus design particularly suitable for applications where deep-lying, coarse, or structured surfaces need to be measured reliably.
The large sphere acts as a mechanical filter, reducing the influence of fine surface structures on the measurement result. As a result, more stable and consistent measurement data can be achieved, especially on rough surfaces.
