Straight styli with a silicon nitride ball have been developed for everyday use on coordinate measuring machines (CMMs) and provide a reliable solution for a wide range of measurement tasks. The combination of a rigid stem and a precision silicon nitride ball offers high stiffness, robust performance, and excellent durability. The stem is characterized by its exceptional rigidity, minimizing unwanted deflection even at longer stylus lengths. This helps ensure precise and repeatable measurement results. Its high inherent stiffness also improves measurement performance when using delicate stylus geometries and small ball diameters. Silicon nitride balls are particularly suitable for measuring and scanning untreated aluminum workpieces. Compared to conventional ruby balls, they show a significantly lower tendency for material adhesion, reducing the buildup of deposits on the ball surface. This contributes to consistently high measurement quality and improved process reliability. As a result, they are the preferred choice for applications involving the regular measurement or scanning of aluminum components.
